MARCH – WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
March – Members Gathering – General Meeting – Guest Speaker Marilyn Dooley – Shared Lunch
To celebrate Women’s History Month {theme for 2010 is Demeter’s Daughters: women’s harvest history}

A Harvest of Shamrocks & Dragons - Saturday 20 March 11.15

Bring some food or drink to share and stay for a shared lunch after Marilyn's talk.

A Harvest of Shamrocks & Dragons will be presented by well known historian Marilyn Dooley. Marilyn is a lively and entertaining speaker and will be exploring the results of her own family history research:

This talk will explore one family’s legacy of its women’s harvest history; and consider the landscape in which the first immigrant and first Australian born generations of our ‘daughters of Demeter’ lived.

My maternal family line goes back four generations to my Irish great grandmother from County Armagh in Northern Ireland, and a Chinese great grandfather from Canton China. They married in 1871 in Central Queensland and lived on Rosewood Diggings Goldfield; where they kept a pub, a store and a market garden on their farm “Armagh”. Their Daughters of Demeter drew water from the nearby creek and carried it on yokes to nourish the celebrated veggies and citrus trees.

The landscape framing our 19th century generations was one of the bush and the gold rushes in Central Queensland.

Down what is now eight generations, the women of my family have  given us a rich heritage of harvesting from the bush to the beach, and through fire, flood and drought. As well as growing vegetables, they have raised chooks, cattle and goats, kept bees, fished in the bush creeks, crabbed in the mangroves on the coast, conducted mango eating competitions, cooked custard to die for on old wood stoves and made Christmas roast dinner in 43 deg heat. During World War 2 my aunts picked cotton for the Women’s Land Army. Today we have women who run their mango plantations, some who grow their veggies and herbs and the odd one who still plants sweet peas each St Patrick’s Day.
